Website security can rightfully be classified as business security.
Analyzing the retrospective, a trend can be seen:

Of course, the further back in time, the lower the rate of website hacks and compromises, because there were fewer websites themselves. But the graph shows the problem as a whole.
The targets of hackers’ attacks can be:
- a small online store;
- a corporate website of a medium-sized company;
- a landing page or personal blog;
- any website with a low level of security.
Types of attacks on websites
Attacks and their results can vary:
-
DDos attack.
The principle is quite simple: a large number of requests are launched on one page of the site until the site’s server exhausts its resources to process them.As a result, simply put – a “white screen” instead of your website.
-
Website hacking.
This is a situation where hackers gain access to your site in one way or another. The consequences can be different:- Complete or partial deletion of the site. No comments needed here.
- Placing malicious code (virus) on the resource. This is a sophisticated form of harm to your site and business as a whole, as your site will gain a reputation for spreading viruses, which can lead to very unpleasant sanctions from search engines and other authoritative internet organizations.
- Gaining access to confidential information. For example, to the customer base of your online store, their order statistics, and so on.
- Making changes to settings. For example, closing the site from indexing by search engines, then the site may completely disappear from the search results of Google, Yandex, and other search engines.
Why do hackers hack websites?
In fact, the motivation of hackers is very clear:
- Money. Your site can be attacked on order, and it’s not that expensive. Prices start at $30. This means it can be affordable for your competitors or envious individuals.
- Competition in search. If you actively promote your site in search engines or place contextual ads, so-called “black SEOs”, to “clear” a place for themselves in the TOP, may attempt attacks on your site.
- Training and skill improvement. Before attacking the Pentagon’s server site, a novice hacker needs to train. Why not do it on a simple site?
The most vulnerable to hacks are sites developed on popular platforms (CMS):

This is because these systems are available for everyone to study their structure and logic.
Of course not! Further development of a site on a popular CMS is much cheaper, simpler, and more effective than on a so-called “handwritten” one.
In this article I touch on this topic.
The web studio team BUSINESSSITE specializes in creating websites on the CMS WordPress – the best platform for corporate websites and landing pages. We have developed a series of measures that significantly improve the security level of our clients’ sites.
Enhanced website security by BUSINESS SITE standards
This list will start with standard security measures.
Setting up user-friendly URL addresses for your website pages
What is meant:
-
without setting up user-friendly URLs.
Such a URL format allows accessing the site’s database through the address bar and using so-called SQL injections to get the login and password from the site’s management system. -
User-friendly URLs set up.
In this case, the possibility of hacking the site through the address bar is almost eliminated. This is also a mandatory measure for internal SEO optimization of the site.

Removing unnecessary plugins and themes
When installing a CMS, its free components (themes and plugins) that are not involved in the site’s operation are often installed. To avoid leaving hackers additional loopholes for hacking, all site components that are not involved in its operation must be removed.
The same applies to removing configuration files after the site has already been installed on the main hosting. Inexperienced web developers often forget to do this, leaving a serious vulnerability of the web resource.
Only licensed plugins
We do not recommend using site components in violation of the license agreement, as they can create additional vulnerabilities.
Setting up the HTTPS protocol
This is a user data encryption protocol that they send to the server through various forms. More details about switching to the HTTPS protocol can be found in this article.
HTTPS will not allow your data to be intercepted, for example, when you log in to the admin panel.

Restricting access to the admin panel by IP address
An additional security measure that we offer to our clients. This excludes access to your site’s management system, even with a login and password, if the IP address from which the authorization is carried out is not allowed in the system.
Installing a Captcha request when logging into the admin panel

This measure will help avoid unauthorized access to your web resource if a hacker tries to guess the site’s password using an automated system.
Non-standard admin panel URL
As mentioned above, the main vulnerability of all popular platforms is that their configuration is known.
We set up a non-standard admin panel URL – any neutral name, and when requesting /wp-login.php, it gives a 404 error.
To enhance the effect of security measures, be sure to read the last paragraph.
Security recommendations for site owners
- Come up with a complex password and an unpredictable login. Do not use a login like “admin”, “administrator”, and so on. This is very predictable for hackers. Use a word that is not related to your site and business in any way. To create a complex password, use a generator, for example, this one: www.onlinepasswordgenerator.ru or the one built into the Chrome browser.
- Do not give access to third parties. No comments needed here.
- Do not skimp on hosting and buy hosting services only from well-known companies with good technical support and resistance to DDos attacks.
- Make a backup of the site at least once a month. In case your site is hacked and deleted, you can easily restore it.
- Visit your site at least 2-3 times a day. This is especially important if you run active advertising campaigns and engage in SEO promotion. Because if the site is unavailable due to hacking and you do not know about it, it will negatively affect the results of the advertising campaigns.
